Raising a child with disabilities, whether from birth, due to an accident, abuse, biological child or not, is a journey like no other. There are no instruction manuals telling you what to expect, types of treatment/ services the child may need or that it will always be a struggle to get or find the equipment needed to afford the child the best quality of life.
When people like Steve Gay hit a roadblock in this journey and decide to make a difference and take action, it benefits so many people. The Special Child Exchange is a life saver for so many families. It provides an online support group where those of us on this journey are able to share tips and information on things we have used that worked and also to give information on things that haven’t. It gives families alternative options to discuss with medical providers. It allows families to network to find much needed equipment for their child that has been denied by insurance or that there is no insurance or funding for.
Personally I am on a fixed income raising my great niece Taylor who is profoundly disabled and funds are not readily available for so many things that would improve her daily life. The Special Child Exchange has given me a connection to others in the same situation that have items they are no longer using that we could benefit from and also gives me a place to offer items we have that are no longer needed here. It is a win‐win situation for all.
I recommend this wonderful group to everyone I come in contact with in the special needs world.
Sincerely, Debbie Dycus Edwardsville, IL
